Translations

Myography

Myography

the recording of muscular contractions.

The simplest method of graphically recording muscular contractions is by mechanical means—by using a lever whose free end traces the corresponding curve (myogram) on the tape of a kymograph. In addition to such mechanical instruments, optical devices that record muscular contractions on photosensitive film or paper are also used. Myographs of different designs make it possible to record isotonic or isometric contractions. The best method is one that measures oscillations in muscular tension by means of sensors that transform mechanical changes into electrical changes that are recorded on an oscillograph. This method is also used to trace contractions of individual muscle cells. Myography, in conjunction with other physiological techniques, has made it possible to study the main patterns of muscle contractility.
