ATP5C1

ATP5C1

A gene on chromosome 12q13.13 that encodes a subunit of mitochondrial ATP synthase, an enzyme that catalyses ATP synthesis, utilising an electrochemical gradient of protons across the inner membrane during oxidative phosphorylation. ATP synthase is composed of two linked multi-subunit complexes: a soluble catalytic core and F1—which consists of 5 different subunits (alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and epsilon) assembled with a stoichiometry of 3 alpha, 3 beta, a single subunit of the other 3, as well as a membrane-spanning component, Fo, which comprises the proton channel. ATP5C1 encodes the gamma unit of the catalytic core.
