Abe, Nobuyuki,

1875–1953, Japanese army officer and political, b. Kanazawa, Ishikawa prefecture. He attended the Imperial Japanese Army Academy and the Army War College, then served as chief of the military affairs bureau and vice minister of the army. Promoted to full general in 1933, he became commander in chief of the Taiwan Army. He retired from the army in 1936. During his short term (Aug., 1939–Jan., 1940) as prime minister and foreign minister, Abe was seen as a moderate who sought to end the Second Sino-Japanese WarSino-Japanese War, Second,
1937–45, conflict between Japanese and Chinese forces for control of the Chinese mainland. The war sapped the Nationalist government's strength while allowing the Communists to gain control over large areas through organization of guerrilla units.
