Oxyuranus (ŏk″sē-ūr′ĭ-nŭs) [″ + Gr. ouranos, heavens] A genus of poisonous land snakes found principally in Australia. The venom of this species is a neurotoxin and anticoagulant. Bites cause paralysis, muscle destruction, respiratory failure, and spontaneous bleeding. Members of the species are often called “taipan.” Species of Oxyuranus include O. microlepidotus (“inland taipan”), O. scutellatus canni(“Papuan taipan”), and O. scutellatus scutellatus, whose venom is used in tests of human blood coagulation.
