In south-central VA, east of Lynchburg; organized 1845 from Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, and Prince Edward counties. Name Origin: For the Appomattox River, which runs through the county; origin of name is obscure: 'tobacco plant country' and 'curving tidal estuary' have been suggested. Apumetec is mentioned as an Indian queen in John Smith's (c.1580-1631) The Generall Historie of Virginia, New-England, & the Summer Isles (1624).
