Vladimir Tractor Works

(full name, A. A. Zhdanov Vladimir Tractor Works, or VTZ), one of the major factories of the USSR tractor industry. Located in the city of Vladimir. Produces T28 × 3 tractors, modified for cotton cultivation and powered by D37M engines of approximately 30 kilowatts (kW), that is, 40 horsepower (hp); T28 × 4 tractors powered by D37E engines of approximately 37 kW (50 hp); D37M, D37E, D21, and D37B air-cooled engines rated from 15 to 37 kW (20 to 50 hp); and consumer items (such as garden tools and hammers). Construction of the first line was completed in April 1945. The Vladimir Tractor Works manufactured Universal wheeled tractors, powered at 22 hp, in four versions (U-l, U-2, U-3, U-4) designed for all types of agricultural work (from 1945 to 1955); 24-hp DT24 tractors (from 1955 to 1958); T28 tractors (since 1958); and air-cooled engines (since 1960). The plant’s gross output in 1970 exceeded that of 1968 by 14.6 percent.

The plant was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1966. Its products were honored with a first prize and the Grande Etoile at the Brussels World’s Fair (1958) and with a gold medal at the International Exhibition of Modern Agricultural Machinery in Moscow (1966).
