Thompson, Llewellyn E., Jr.

(1904–72) diplomat, Kremlinologist; born in Los Animas, Colo. He entered the Foreign Service in 1929 and served in Switzerland, the Soviet Union, and Great Britain (1929–46). An expert on Eastern European and Soviet affairs, he helped to negotiate the Austrian State Treaty (1952–55). As ambassador to the Soviet Union (1957–62, 1967–69) he was known for his tact and "quiet diplomacy." He maintained an excellent rapport with the top Soviet leaders during tense moments such as the U-2 incident and the Berlin crisis.
