population trap

a situation in which a country's rate of POPULATION growth is greater than its attainable rate of ECONOMIC GROWTH. As a consequence, INCOME PER HEAD declines and the problem of alleviating mass poverty is made worse. To remedy this situation, it may be necessary for the government to introduce birth control programmes. This problem is sometimes found in a DEVELOPING COUNTRY. See DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSMISSION.
