Skrebitskii, Aleksandr Il’ich

Born May 2 (14), 1827; died September 1915. Russian historian; ophthalmologist.

Skrebitskii graduated from the law faculty of the University of St. Petersburg in 1849 and received the degree of doctor of medicine from the University of Dorpat in 1859. He studied the history of the peasantry and the materials of the Editing Commissions on the Peasant Reform of 1861. Skrebitskii’s most important work, Peasant Affairs During the Reign of Emperor Alexander II (vols. 1-4, 1862-68), was a detailed historical commentary on the Statutes of Feb. 19, 1861; the work was awarded the Uvarov Prize of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1871.

Skrebitskii also studied eye diseases and the causes for their prevalence in Russia.
