Robertson sign Robertson sign An obsolete term for the loss of the normal pupillary dilation when pressure is applied to a painful site, formerly thought to be of help in differentiating somatic from psychogenic pain.Robertson, William Egbert, U.S. physician, 1869-1956. Robertson sign - (1) a contraction over the area of the heart of the pectoralis muscle signalling pending death from cardiac disease; - (2) signals malingering when pupillary dilatation is absent upon placing pressure on areas identified as painful; - (3) demonstrated when the patient has ascites. |
