Pancratium

a genus of plants of the family Amaryl-lidaceae. The plants are perennial bulbous grasses. They have linear or strap-shaped leaves, leafless flower stalk, and large, white flowers. The inflorescence is an umbel. The perianth has an elongated cylindrical tube and a six-segmented blade with narrow lobes. The fused staminate filaments form a serrate tube, or crown. The fruit is a capsule.

There are approximately 14 species of Pancratium, distributed on the seacoasts of southern Europe, western and southern Asia, and northern and tropical Africa. The USSR has one species, P. maritimum, which grows along the sandy shores of the Black Sea. P. maritimum and P. illyricum are occasionally cultivated as ornamentals. Species of the closely related genus Hymenocallis are sometimes classified among the Pancratium.
