Pososhnoe

Pososhnoe

(pososhnoe oblozhenie, or soshnoe), a tax assessed on land that was introduced in Russia in the mid-16th century and collected until the late 17th century. The basic unit of taxation for the pososhnoe was the sokha (a measure of arable land). The tax increased steeply over the course of the 16th and 17th centuries. It gradually lost its agrarian aspect as its assessment came to depend increasingly on the commercial and productive activities of the taxable population. It was replaced by a household tax in 1679.
