Styrikovich, Mikhail
Styrikovich, Mikhail Adol’fovich
Born Nov. 3 (16), 1902, in St. Petersburg. Soviet thermal power engineer and scientist specializing in high-temperature physics. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1964; corresponding member, 1946). Hero of Socialist Labor (1972).
Styrikovich graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Technology in 1927. He worked at the Boiler and Turbine Institute from 1928 to 1946 and taught at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute from 1939 to 1971. From 1939 to 1960 he worked at the Institute of Power Engineering of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1961 he became head of the department of mass exchange of the Laboratory of High Temperatures (since 1962, the Institute of High Temperatures of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR).
Styrikovich’s principal works have been devoted to the study of heat and power installations, the working processes of steam boilers, and the problems of heat transfer in boiling liquids under high pressures. Styrikovich developed standards for thermal and aerodynamic calculations of boiler units. He has conducted research in hydrodynamics, heat and mass exchange, scale formation under conditions of two-phase flow, the structure of boiling boundary layers, and mass exchange and physicochemical processes in magnetohydrodynamic generators.
Styrikovich is a member of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, an honorary vice-president of the International Executive Council of the World Energy Conference, and vice-president of the International Center for Heat and Mass Transfer. He has been awarded two Orders of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals.
