(also Rodriguez), an island in the Indian Ocean, in the Mascarene Islands. Part of the state of Mauritius. Area, 111 sq km. Population, 24,700 (1972).

Rodrigues is of volcanic origin and is surrounded by coral reefs. Its maximum elevation is 369 m. The island has a tropical climate and is located in the trade-wind zone. Precipitation is particularly heavy in the summer and totals 1,500–2,500 mm per year. Rodrigues is subject to hurricanes from January to March. Its economy is based on fishing and agriculture—there are sugar cane, cotton, coffee, and tobacco plantations. The principal city is Port Mathurin.
