Vygozero

(Vygozero Reservoir, Vyg, Bobrovoe), a reservoir in the Karelian ASSR, created during the construction of the White Sea-Baltic Canal in 1933 by the head of the Nizhnii Vyg and Vygozero Lake. Its area is 1,250 sq km (the area of Vygozero alone is 560 sq km), and its volume is 6.5 cu km. The average depth is 6.2 m, the maximum depth approximately 24 m. The coastline is very sinuous, and there are many islands. Vygozero is fed by snow and rain. The variation in the water level is 0.50-1.3 m. The reservoir freezes over in late October and early November, thawing in mid May. Its tributaries are the Verkhnii Vyg, Vozhma, Segezha, and Onda rivers. Vygozero drains into the sluices of the Nizhnii Vyg; its drainage is regulated seasonally for energy and navigation. Vendace, bream, whitefish, perch, ide, pike, and other fish are caught in Vygozero. On its shores are located the city of Segezha and the settlement of Nadvoitsy.
