Rakitin, Iurii Vladimirovich
Born Mar. 23 (Apr. 5), 1911, in the city of Dukhovshchina, in present-day Smolensk Oblast. Soviet plant physiologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1962). Became a member of the CPSU in 1943.
Rakitin graduated from Gorky Agricultural Institute in 1932. He became a doctor of biological sciences in 1941 and a professor in 1946. Since 1935 he has worked at the Institute of Plant Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR; he was made head of the institute’s laboratory in 1944. Rakitin advanced the concept of the stimulating, inhibiting, and lethal effects of various chemical and physical agents on plants. He is currently studying such agents for possible use in directing the life activities of plants. Rakitin has been editor in chief of the journal Agrokhimiia (Agrochemistry) since 1964. He has been awarded two orders and various medals.
