Vardenis
(until 1969, Basargechar), an urban-type settlement, administrative center of Vardenis Raion, Armenian SSR. Situated to the east of Lake Sevan, 183 km from Yerevan. Population, 10,200 (1969). A cheese plant, a brewery, and a panel-making plant are located there. There is also a medical school. Gold is mined in the raion from the Zodskoe deposit.
Vardenis
a mountain range in the Armenian Highlands, (Armenian SSR), bordering on the Sevan depression to the south. Length, about 60 km; maximum elevation, 3,522 m (Mount Vardenis). The Vardenis Mountain Range is composed chiefly of basalt and andesite. Xerophyte mountain steppe vegetation covers the slopes; there are alpine meadows higher up.
