On the southeastern border of WA; original county; organized Apr 25, 1854 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: Apparently for a small tribe, closely related to the Nez Perce, which took its name from the Walla Walla River, 'place of many waters,' referring to the many tributaries, springs, and streams in the area. Lewis and Clark recorded the name as Wollah Wollah.
