, river, c.400 mi (640 km) long, rising in the center of the Taymyr Peninsula, N Siberian Russia. It flows NE through Lake Taymyr (c.2,700 sq mi/6,990 sq km) and into the Taymyr Gulf of the Kara Sea. Taymyr Island is near its mouth.

Taimyra

 

a river in Krasnoiarsk Krai, RSFSR. The Taimyra measures 840 km in length (according to some data, 638 km) and drains an area of 124,000 sq km. It originates in the Byrranga Mountains. Before it flows into Lake Taimyr it is called the Verkhniaia Taimyra; this section measures 567 km in length. The river then flows through Lake Taimyr, below which it is called Nizhniaia Taimyr; this section measures 187 km in length. The Taimyra empties into Taimyr Bay of the Kara Sea. It is fed mainly by snow. High water is from mid-June to September. In the winter, from November to May, the discharge is less than 8 percent of the annual average. The mean flow rate is 1,220 cu m per sec. The Taimyra freezes in late September or early October, and the ice breaks up in late May or June. There is fishing for Coregonusautumnalis, muksun, nelma, and the least cisco (Coregonussardinella).
