Virolleaud, Charles

Born July 2, 1879, in Barbezieux. French scholar in Semitic, Sumerian, and Iranian studies.

Virolleaud began participating in scientific expeditions to Iran, Syria, and Lebanon in the late 1890’s. From 1920 to 1929 he was the director of the department of antiquities of Syria and Lebanon. He was a professor at the Sorbonne and the School of Oriental Languages. In 1941 he became a member of the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres. He was president of the Asiatic Society from 1951 to 1964. In 1929-30 he deciphered (with H. Bauer and E. Dhorme) the inscriptions of ancient Ugarit (Ras Shamra).
