Aycock, Charles Brantley

(1859–1912) governor; born in Wayne County, N.C. A Goldsboro lawyer, he was a United States attorney general in North Carolina (1893–97). As Democratic governor (1901–05), he established a literacy test to remove black voters from the rolls, while funding new school construction and teacher training for whites. He returned to his law practice afterward.
