Location:Northwestern section of Lake Huron, near Alpena, Michigan.
Activities:Scuba diving, boating, kayaking, fishing. Visitors can also learn about seafaring on the Great Lakes aboard replicas of historic sailing vessels.
Special Features:Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve is the first sanctuary located in the Great Lakes region, the first one infresh water, and only the second one designated to protect underwater cultural resources. Description:Description: Sanctuary encompasses 448 square miles of northwest Lake Huron, off the northeast coast of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The landward boundary of the sanctuary/preserve is marked by the northern and southern limits of Alpena County, and the sanctuary/preserve extends east from the lakeshore to longitude 83 degrees west. An estimated 200 shipwrecks that span two centuries of Great Lakes maritime history are located in and around the sanctuary. Facilities:Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center in Alpena, MI.
