Patterson, Joseph Medill

Patterson, Joseph Medill

(1879–1946) newspaper publisher; born in Chicago. Sharing ownership and control of the Chicago Tribune with his cousin, Robert McCormick, he cofounded the Illustrated Daily News (later the New York Daily News) with him in 1919, and, in 1925, moved to New York to assume management of that paper, the first of the sensational mass-audience tabloids.
