Royal College

Royal College

An academic college which has been granted the right to affix the prenomial Royal, usually through a Royal Charter. The term is most commonly used for medical professional societies—e.g., Royal College of Pathologists, Royal College of Physicians, Royal College of Psychiatrists, Royal College of Nursing, etc.— primarily in the UK and Commonwealth countries (e.g., Australia, Canada). Each major medical speciality in the UK is presided over by a Royal College, which sets the standards and works with the Deanery and the GMC in setting standards for specialist training.
