Vinogradov, Pavlin Fedorovich

Born January 1890; died Sept. 8, 1918, in the village of Shidrovo, in present-day Vinogradov Raion, Arkhangel’sk Oblast. Hero of the Civil War. Born near St. Petersburg, the son of a factory shop assistant.

Vinogradov was a worker and participated in the revolutionary movement in 1905. In 1912 he was arrested and sent to the army; he was sentenced to eight years of forced labor for refusal to take an oath to the tsar and for revolutionary propaganda. After the February Revolution of 1917, Vinogradov was in Petrograd and participated in the struggle against the Kornilov Mutiny and in the storming of the Winter Palace. In February 1918 he was dispatched to Arkhangel’sk to organize the food supply for Petrograd and was elected vice-chairman of the Arkhangel’sk Province Executive Committee. In July 1918 he led the suppression of a kulak mutiny in Shenkursk District; in August 1918, upon the assignment of the Arkhangel’sk Province Executive Committee, he set up and commanded the Severnaia Dvina Military Flotilla, which participated in the fighting against the White Guard and the interventionists. Vinogradov died in battle.
