Established: 1953.
Location:About 20 miles south of Richmond, Virginia.
Facilities:Visitor center, trails.
Activities:Hunting, fishing (from boat only), educational programs.
Special Features:A 28-foot pontoon boat ferrys visitors to the refuge during scheduled events.
Habitats: 1,329-acre island in the James River, composed mostly of hardwood swamp with a fringe of marsh and about 300 acres of upland fields.
Access: By advance reservation; call refuge office.
Wild life: Canada geese, wood ducks, black ducks, and mallards.
