Volga Pike Perch

 

(Lucioperca volgensis), a fish of the suborder Percoidea; closely related to the pike perch. Its length is usually about 25 cm, and it weighs 250 g; occasionally the length is 45 cm and the weight 1.4 kg. The fish are found in the basins of the northern parts of the caspian and Black seas and the sea of Azov (mostly in the lower courses of the rivers flowing into them). They feed on fry, small fish, and crustaceans. Spawning takes place in april or May. Their economic significance is small.
