Volkmann's ischaemic contracture

Shortening, weakening and FIBROSIS of forearm muscles as a result of loss of blood supply, usually following a fracture of the upper arm bone or an elbow injury. The effect is a fixed and disabling deformity with bending of the wrist and fingers. Treatment is difficult and involves major surgery. (Richard von Volkmann, 1830–89, German surgeon).
