Priede, Gunārs
(also Gunar Reinkhol’dovich Priede). Born Mar. 17, 1928, in Riga. Soviet Latvian playwright. Member of the CPSU since 1960.
Priede graduated from the department of architecture at the Latvian University in 1953. His plays were first published in 1955. His works include The Summer of a Younger Brother (1955), Even Though It Is Autumn (1956), Normund’s Girl (1958; State Prize of the Latvian SSR, 1959), Vika’s First Ball (1961), Your Good Name (1965), and Waiting for Aivars (1974). The sharpness and realism of Priede’s problem plays, whose heroes are mainly young contemporaries, have contributed to their stage success.
Priede became secretary of the Writers’ Union of the Latvian SSR in 1972. He has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor.
