Prilezhaev, Nikolai Aleksandrovich

Born Sept. 15 (27), 1877, in Nizhny Novgorod, now Gorky; died May 26, 1944, in Moscow. Soviet organic chemist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1933) and academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR (1940).

Prilezhaev graduated from the faculty of physics and mathematics at the University of Warsaw in 1900 and became a professor there in 1912. He was a professor at the Kiev Polytechnic Institute beginning in 1915 and at the Byelorussian University beginning in 1924. In 1909, Prilezhaev developed a method of obtaining α-oxides of olefins by direct oxidation of the double bond with peracids, particularly benzoyl hydroperoxide, C₆ H₅ COOOH.
