Talien

 

(Dal’nii, Dairen), a city and major port in northeastern China in Liaoning Province, at the southern tip of the Liaotung Peninsula on the Bay of Talien in the Yellow Sea. Talien and the city of Lüshun are part of the administrative region of Lüta. Talien is a base for the fishing industry as well as an important center for foreign trade. The city has a variety of industries, including metal-working and machine building (for example, shipbuilding), the manufacture of chemicals (fertilizer and dyes), textiles, and food processing (chiefly vegetable oil). Polytechnic and medical institutes, as well as other higher educational institutions, are located in the city.

Talien was founded under the name of Dal’nii by Russians on territory temporarily leased to Russia under the Convention of 1898. The city was built on the site of the fishing village of Ch’ingniwa. and since I860 it has been known as Talien.

In May 1904 during the Russo-Japanese War (1904–05), Talien was seized by Japan and held (under the name of Dairen) until the end of World War II. On Aug. 22–23. 1945. Talien and Lüshun (Port Arthur) were liberated from Japanese occupation by the Soviet Army. Under the Soviet-Chinese treaty of Aug. 14. 1945. Talien was recognized by the Chinese government as a free port. At the same time, its harbors and warehouses were leased to the Soviet Union for 30 years. With the formation of the Chinese People’s Republic and the conclusion of a Soviet-Chinese treaty of friendship, alliance, and mutual assistance on Feb. 14, 1950, all property held in use or lease by the Soviets in Talien was returned without cost during 1950 to the Chinese under a general agreement on the China-Ch’angch’un Railroad, Port Arthur, and Talien.
