Khalidi, Ruhi al-

(full name, Ruhi ibn Muhammad Yasin ibn Muhammad Ali al-Khalidi). Born 1864 in Jerusalem; died 1913 in Istanbul. Palestinian Arab educator, literary scholar, historian, and state figure.

Al-Khalidi studied law in Istanbul; there he met the prominent Muslim reformer Jamal al-Din al-Afghani, whose ideas he helped spread. Al-Khalidi graduated from the Sorbonne and the School of Political Science in Paris. From 1899 to 1908 he served as Ottoman consul in Bordeaux, and in 1908 he was elected to the House of Representatives of the Parliament of the Ottoman Empire as a deputy representing Jerusalem.

Al-Khalidi is the author of such works as A History of Literary Scholarship Among the Europeans and the Arabs (1904), A History of the East and Its Emirs (1908), and The Ottoman Political Revolution (1909).
