a mountain range in central Portugal. The Serra da Estrêla, which constitutes the elevated western edge of the Meseta, extends 80 km and rises to an elevation of 1,991 m at Malhão da Estrêla, which is the highest peak in Portugal. The peaks have smooth contours and the slopes are steep and deeply dissected by rivers. The range has meadows and Mediterranean shrub and forest vegetation. There are deposits of tungsten (at Panasqueira), uranium (near Guarda), and tin.
