Abscisic Acid

A lipid hormone of plant origin which is involved in cell signalling. It inhibits plant cell growth and is associated with fruit drop, leaf death and seed dormancy, and helps plants respond to water loss and seasonal changes. Its effects can be reversed with gibberellins. It is synthesised in plastids from carotenoids.

abscisic acid

a plant growth substance. It is called abscisin when found in ageing leaves and it is partly responsible for leaf ABSCISSION. It is also called DORMIN when in buds and seeds, and causes induction of dormancy. See Fig. 3 .
