Achinsk

 

city in Krasnoiarsk Krai, RSFSR. It is located on the spurs of the Arga Range, on the right bank of the Chulym River (tributary of the Ob’), where it is crossed by the Siberian Railroad; railroads also lead from Achinsk north to Maklakovo and south to Abakan. The city has a wharf. The population is 85,000 (1969); it was 32,000 in 1939. The city has food industries (elevators, a meat combine, and fodder and dairy plants); a mica-processing factory; machine repair plants; building materials enterprises; a fur products combine; and clothing, footwear, and furniture factories. Alumina is produced for the Krasnoiarsk aluminum plant. The city has an industrial and pedagogical technicum; a mechanical and technological technicum; construction, agricultural, and Soviet trade technicums; and pedagogical and medical schools. It has a drama theater and museums of regional studies and revolutionary history. Achinsk was founded in 1682 and became a district city in 1782. Coal is extracted near Achinsk.
