Vasilii Androsov

Born 1803, in Ros-lavl’; died Oct. 20, 1841, in Moscow. Russian economist and statistician and literary and public figure.

Androsov taught statistics at the Moscow School of Agriculture. His literary activity began in 1824 with contributions to Zemledel’ cheskii zhurnal (Agricultural Journal). Androsov’s works Economic Statistics of Russia (1827), Agricultural Statistics of Russia (1832), and A Statistical Record of Moscow (1832) contain valuable factual material about the economic history of Russia in the beginning of the 19th century. His book On the Subject Matter and Present Status of Political Economy (1833) was the first Russian-language survey of political economic history and the development of economic thought. It was written from the point of view of classical bourgeois political economy. His article on I. Kant’s philosophy appeared in Vestnik Evropy in 1826. From 1835 to 1838 he was editor and publisher of the magazine Moskovskii nabliudatel’, in which V. G. Belinskii was published.
