Nurymbetov, Sadyk
Born 1900 in what is now Kegeili Raion, Kara-Kalpak ASSR; died Oct. 11, 1971, in Nukus. Soviet Kara-Kalpak poet. People’s Poet of Kara-Kalpakia (1942). People’s Singer of Uzbekistan (1957).
Nurymbetov studied in a madrasa and on his own. He began publishing in the mid-1920’s. His poetry, which includes lyric and epic poems, was inspired by the socialist life of the Kara-Kalpaks. He is the author of the books Radiant Dawn (1954), Songs of the New Epoch (1962), and Brothers (1968; Berdakh Prize of the Kara-Kalpak ASSR, 1971). His works have been translated into various languages of the peoples of the USSR. Nurymbetov was awarded two orders and a number of medals.
