a district in western Rumania. Area, 8,700 km. Population, 647,600 (1974). The administrative center is the city of Timisoara. Timis, one of Rumania’s most economically developed regions, accounts for 3.7 percent of the nation’s gross industrial output and 5.5 percent of its gross agricultural output. Oil, natural gas, and lignite are extracted. The district produces machinery, chemicals, foodstuffs, textiles, and leather and foot wear. Wheat, maize, barley, sunflowers, and sugar beets are cultivated. Truck farming and the cultivation of fruit trees are also important. Livestock consists of 247,000 cattle, 717,000 swine, and 537,000 sheep.
