[′stad·ik ′lōd] (mechanics) A nonvarying load; the basal pressure exerted by the weight of a mass at rest, such as the load imposed on a drill bit by the weight of the drill-stem equipment or the pressure exerted on the rocks around an underground opening by the weight of the superimposed rocks. Also known as dead load.
