[′sȯf‚wer ′məl·ti‚pleks·iŋ] (computer science) A procedure used in a time-sharing or multiprogrammed system in which the central processing unit, acting under control of a software algorithm, interleaves its attention between a family of programs waiting for service, in such a way that the programs appear to be processed in parallel.
