[¦sü·prə′kärd·nəl ‚vānz] (vertebrate zoology) Paired longitudinal veins in the mammalian embryo and various adult lower vertebrates in the thoracic and abdominal regions, dorsolateral to and on the sides of the descending aorta; they replace the postcardinal and subcardinal veins.
