Sahib Singh Sokhey

Born Dec. 15, 1887; died Oct. 23, 1971. Indian public figure and doctor of medicine; professor.

Sokhey was educated in colleges and universities in India, Great Britain, the USA, and Canada. He served as a doctor during World War I (1914–18) from 1915 to 1918. In the period 1925–50 he worked at the Haffkine Institute in Bombay, becoming its director in 1932. From 1950 to 1952 he was deputy director general of the World Health Organization. Sokhey was a member of the Indian Academy of Sciences and from 1953 to 1958 was president of the Association of Scientific Workers of India. A prominent member of the peace movement, he was vice-president of the All-India Peace Council and a member of the World Peace Council. Sokhey was awarded the International Lenin Prize for Strengthening Peace Among Nations in 1953.
