Soil Smoothing
Soil Smoothing
leveling the surface of a field and partially loosening the topsoil. Soil smoothing is done by floats and drags. The soil is smoothed out in the spring as soon as the tops of the crests formed in fall plowing dry out. The procedure is done somewhat earlier than or at the same time as harrowing. Soil smoothing is effective on soils that are not inclined to become mucky. The small-clump layer formed on the surface prevents the evaporation of moisture. To avoid crusting of topsoil, smoothing is not done on heavy clay and salinized soils.
