Sokolov, Pavel Petrovich

Born June 16 (27), 1764, in St. Petersburg; died there Sept. 24 (Oct. 6), 1835. Russian sculptor.

Sokolov graduated from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1785. A prominent master of decorative sculpture in the style of classicism, he is known for the iron figures he created for several bridges in St. Petersburg in 1825 and 1826—the griffins on the Bankovskii Bridge over the Griboedov Canal, and the sphinxes near the former Egyptian Bridge across the Fontanka. For the park in Tsarskoe Selo (now the city of Pushkin) he created the statue Milkmaid With a Broken Jug (bronze and granite, 1816).
