[′shan·ən ‚fȯr·myə·lə] (communications) A theorem in information theory which states that the highest number of binary digits per second which can be transmitted with arbitrarily small frequency of error is equal to the product of the bandwidth and log2(1 + R), where R is the signal-to-noise ratio.
