Research Assessment Exercise

A process which was undertaken in 5-year cycles, and formally assessed the quality of research conducted in UK universities. The RAE was conducted jointly by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) and the Department for Employment and Learning, Northern Ireland (DEL). The RAE’s last assessment was in 2008; it has been replaced by the Research Excellence Framework.
