Location:Northern Oklahoma, about 30 miles northwest of Enid.
Facilities:Visitor center, viewing sites, hiking trails, auto tour route.
Activities:Boating, fishing, hunting, hiking, crystal digging, educational programs.
Special Features:The salt plains are a unique geological area. Almost perfectly flat, the land is barren, with a wafer-thin salt crust. The salt was formed by repeated flooding by sea water millions of years ago. The sea water was cut off from the sea and evaporated, depositing thick layers of salt.
Habitats: 32,000 acres of salt flats, open reservoir, woodlands, grasslands, and agricultural fields.
Access: Open daylight hours.
Wild life: Migratory ducks, geese, Whooping and Sandhill cranes, mountain lion, bobcat, coyote, white-tailed deer, toads and frogs, turtles and snakes.
