Solts, Aron

(Arenas Soleas). Born Mar. 10 (22), 1872, in the village of Solinikas, Vil’na Province, in what is now the Lithuanian SSR; died Apr. 30,1945, in Moscow. Soviet party figure. Member of the Communist Party from 1898.

The son of a merchant, Sol’ts studied in the faculty of law at the University of St. Petersburg. He joined the revolutionary movement in 1895 and became a member of the Social Democratic group Rabochee Znamia (Workers’ Banner) in 1898. He was expelled from the university in 1899. Sol’ts joined the staff of Iskra in 1901. He conducted party work in Vilnius, Ekaterinoslav (Dnepropetrovsk), Tiumen’, Baku, St. Petersburg, and Moscow, while serving as a member of local (RSDLP) committees. He was arrested and exiled to Siberia several times but managed to flee from exile.

In 1916, Sol’ts became a member of the Moscow oblast bureau of the Central Committee of the RSDLP. After the February Revolution of 1917 he became a member of the Moscow committee of the RSDLP(B) and the editorial boards of the newspapers Sotsial-demokrat (Moscow) and Pravda. In 1918 he joined the Left Communists. From 1920 to 1934 he worked on the Central Control Commission of the ACP(B). In 1921 he became a member of the Supreme Court of the RSFSR. Later he became a member of the Supreme Court of the USSR and worked in the Procurator’s Office of the USSR.

Sol’ts was a delegate to the seventh and the ninth through seventeenth Party congresses. He was a member of the Central Control Commission from 1920 to 1934 and joined its Presidium in 1923. He was a member of the International Control Commission of the Comintern.
