Special Features:From 1861 to 1865 the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia was caught in the crossfire between the North and the South. Because of its strategic location, this fertile agricultural valley became a significant theater of war. Today 15 battlefields and more than 320 sites, towns, villages, and farms in this eight-county National Historic District attest to the struggle and perserverance of the soldiers and civilians who shaped this turning point in American history.
