SHEN therapy

SHEN therapy

Fringe medicine
A system of energy medicine/bodywork developed in the 1970s by RR Pavek for releasing deeply embedded painful emotions. In SHEN therapy, the practitioner places his or her paired hands on various sites of the client’s body in a specific sequence, allegedly allowing submerged positive emotions (love, joy, confidence) to flow out of the client.
According to Pavek, the body’s life energy flows through the body in a specific direction, and painful emotions can become trapped and disrupt normal functions. He identified a so-called “autocontractile pain response” as the mechanism by which emotions become trapped and disrupt normal physiologic functions. SHEN therapy is said to be useful for anxiety, arthritis, chronic gastrointestinal complaints, depression, eating disorders, oedema, menstrual complaints, migraines, post-traumatic pain, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and others.
